Engaging the anomalous: reflections from the anthropology of the paranormal

Abstract

This review article looks at some of the parallels between the contents of this special issue on the paranormal and insights from the anthropology of religion, the anthropology of consciousness, transpersonal anthropology and the anthropology of the paranormal. The paper introduces the history of anthropology’s engagement with the paranormal, from the early evolutionist perspectives of anthropology’s pioneers to the most recent experiential approaches of the anthropology of consciousness. The paper concludes by highlighting the potential benefits of a cross-pollination of psychotherapeutic and anthropological research on the paranormal.

Dieser Übersichtsartikel nimmt einige inhaltliche Parallelen dieser Sonderausgabe zum Paranormalen und den Einsichten aus der Religions- und Bewusstseinsanthropologie sowie der transpersonalen als auch der paranormalen Anthropologie in den Blick. Der Artikel beginnt mit einem historischen Abriss zur Beschäftigung der Anthropologie mit dem Paranormalen, angefangen mit den Vorreitern der Anthropologie und deren evolutionstheoretischen Überlegungen, bis hin zu den neueren, empirischen Zugängen der Bewusstseinsanthropologie. Abschließend werden noch mögliche Vorteile aufgezeigt, die sich durch eine Verknüpfung von psychotherapeutischer und anthropologischer Forschungen zum Paranormalen erzielen ließe.

Este artículo crítico contempla algunos de los paralelos existentes entre los contenidos en este número especial acerca de lo paranormal y los diferentes puntos de vista de la antropología de la religión, la antropología de la conciencia, la antropología transpersonal y la antropología de lo paranormal. El artículo presenta la historia del compromiso de la antropología con lo paranormal, desde las perspectivas evolucionistas iniciales de sus fundadores hasta los métodos experienciales más recientes de la antropología de la conciencia. El artículo concluye destacando los beneficios potenciales de una polinización cruzada entre la antropología y la psicoterapia en la investigación de lo paranormal.

Questa recensione esamina alcuni dei parallelismi tra i contenuti presenti in questo numero dedicato al paranormale e alcuni approfondimenti di antropologia della religione, antropologia della coscienza, antropologia transpersonale e antropologia del paranormale. Il contributo introduce alla storia del coinvolgimento dell’antropologia con il paranormale, dalle primi prospettive evoluzionistiche dei pionieri ddell’antropologia ai più recenti approcci esperienziali dell'antropologia della coscienza. L'articolo si conclude evidenziando i potenziali benefici di una “impollinazione incrociata” della ricerca psicoterapeutica e antropologica relativa al paranormale.

Cet article passe en revue certains des parallèles existant entre le contenu de ce numéro spécial sur le paranormal et une vision venant de l'anthropologie des religions, l'anthropologie de la conscience, l'anthropologie transpersonnelle et l'anthropologie du paranormal. L'article introduit l'histoire des relations entre anthropologie et paranormal, depuis les premières perspectives évolutionnistes des pionniers de l'anthropologie jusqu'aux approches anthropologiques de la conscience. L'article se termine par la mise en avant des bénéfices potentiels d'un enrichissement mutuel entre la recherche psychothérapeutique et la recherche anthropologique sur le paranormal.

Αυτό το άρθρο ανασκόπησης εξετάζει μερικές από τις ομοιότητες μεταξύ του περιεχομένου αυτής της ειδικής έκδοσης για το παραφυσικό και των στοιχείων που προέκυψαν από την ανθρωπολογία της θρησκείας, την ανθρωπολογία της συνείδησης, τη διαπροσωπική ανθρωπολογία και την ανθρωπολογία του παραφυσικού. Το άρθρο παρουσιάζει την ιστορία της ενασχόλησης της ανθρωπολογίας με το παραφυσικό, από τις πρώτες εξελικτικές προοπτικές των πρωτοπόρων της ανθρωπολογίας μέχρι τις πιο πρόσφατες βιωματικές προσεγγίσεις της ανθρωπολογίας της συνείδησης. Καταλήγει τονίζοντας τα πιθανά οφέλη από μια διασταύρωση της ψυχοθεραπευτικής και ανθρωπολογικής έρευνας με το παραφυσικό.

2. I have argued elsewhere for an inversion of ontological bracketing, what I term ‘ontological flooding’ as a potential alternative approach to the paranormal. Instead of bracketing out ontological questions, we open the ontological floodgates and entertain a whole range of possibilities. In essence, this approach destabilises ontological certainty, and opens up new avenues for research that the bracketed approach keeps shut (Hunter, 2015b).
