Notes

1. It is fictional inasmuch as it is an arbitrary compilation of vignettes of actual clients that I have worked with.

2. For years now, I have been curious at the coincidence that both Husserl and Freud were born in the region of Moravia – part of the Austro-Hungaro empire at the time – within 3 years of each other.

3. The use of ‘man’ by Foucault is not conventional within its time but quite intentional. As he explains when discussing the history of sexuality: ‘ Sex, the theory of sex, the rules for the techniques of the self, the rules for sexual behaviour and so on has been imposed by males, by a male society and by a male civilization. So, I think, that this story […] has to be done from the point of view of males’ (transcribed by present author and emphasis added, Foucault (Citation1983, 46:10-48:40).

4. For an introduction on Deleuze and psychology/psychotherapy, see Nichterlein (Citation2008, Citation2018, Citation2019) and Nichterlein and Morss (Citation2017).

5. Interestingly, in the front material of this translation, there is a facsimile of the ‘reader’s report’ written in 1965 by Ronald D. Laing, then editor of the series on Existentialism and Phenomenology at Tavistock Publications. Here, Laing supports the publication of the abridged version of this text (Foucault, Citation2006) by stating that ‘this is quite an exceptional book of very high calibre – brilliantly written, intellectually rigorous, and with a thesis that thoroughly shakes the assumptions of traditional psychiatry.’

6. Nietzsche makes this claim initially in The Joyous (Gay) Science (Citation1882/2018), but it became popularized through Thus Spake Zarathustra (Citation1884/1954).

7. The Anti-Christ was initially written in 1888 yet published only in 1897, a sign of the provocative nature of its contents, giving an indication of the severity of the blow.

8. For further articulation of this ethology, see Buchanan (Citation2008) and also Nichterlein & Morss, Citation2017, p. 101–117)
