Broadening of extended X-ray absorption fine structure arising from the finite lifetime of the K hole

Pages 541-558 | Received 27 Sep 1983, Accepted 02 Dec 1983, Published online: 02 Sep 2006

Abstract

It is shown that for elements with Z ⪆ 40, the standard description of the extended X-ray-absorption fine structure (EXAFS) is invalid because the short lifetime of the K hole is neglected. A modified formula is derived that explicitly exhibits the broadening associated with the decay of the K hole. The effect of the broadening on the accuracy of extracted structural information from EXAFS is investigated.
