Direct observation of the transformation of the icosahedral phase in (Al₆Mn)_1−xSi_x, into α(AlMnSi)

Abstract

In-situ heating of the icosahedral phase in (Al₆Mn)_1−xSi_x, x = 0·02 and 0·04, in a Philips EM420 electron microscope leads to the formation of α(AlMnSi) and Al₆Mn crystalline phases. The orientation relationship between the icosahedral phase and the α phase is found to be

as suggested by Guyot and Audier, and Elser and Henley.
