Theory of glass transitions

New thoughts about old facts

Pages 113-127 | Received 05 Dec 1986, Accepted 15 Jan 1987, Published online: 20 Aug 2006

Abstract

A short review of some salient features of glass transitions and their possible theoretical explanation is given. The old data of Kohlrausch (1854), which led him to introduce the now ubiquitous stretched exponential relaxation function, are presented. Theoretical models for non-exponential relaxation in supercooled liquids and glasses are reviewed briefly. Attempts to explain the viscosities of strong-network liquids like fused quartz in terms of broken bonds are described in some detail.
