Minimal surfaces and fast-ion conductors

Pages 691-702 | Received 14 Jul 1987, Accepted 14 Sep 1987, Published online: 20 Aug 2006

Abstract

Diffusion trajectories of mobile ions in solid electrolytes are analysed in terms of a simple electrostatic model which assumes that mobile species are subject only to interactions with a fixed lattice of immobile ions. Under these assumptions the model predicts that ions move along periodic minimal surfaces, a conclusion consistent with recent work. The theory is applied to two well known solid electrolytes: α-AgI and β-PbF2.
