Studies of amorphous arsenic under pressure

Pages 473-481 | Received 27 Jan 1987, Accepted 31 Mar 1987, Published online: 20 Aug 2006

Abstract

The pressure dependences of microstructure, volume and optical absorption edge of amorphous As have been studied. The results indicate that amorphous As is more similar to chalcogenide glasses than to amorphous, tetrahedrally bonded materials. The strong red-shift of the optical absorption edge can be ascribed to enhanced interactions between distorted layer clusters via the back-bonds.
