Abstract

T2 (Al6Li3Cu) precipitates formed by solid-state reactions in an Al-Li-Cu ternary alloy have been studied by convergent-beam electron diffraction (CBED). Asymmetries observed in the CBED patterns indicate that the T2 phase is not icosahedral (i.e. no fivefold symmetry exists), as has been previously reported. By careful thinning of the precipitates, the microcrystalline nature of T2 became apparent, and the true structure appears to be a twinned cubic unit cell.
