Abstract

This article deals with continuity and change in the Afro-Caribbean family of Curacao in the twentieth century. In the 1940s and 1950s, with full employment for men and after a multinational company offered financial benefits for legally married workers and their families, marriage rates increased and the percentage of children born to unmarried mothers [1] decreased substantially. Yet with lay-offs and economic decline this trend was reversed. The change had been short-term and, five decades later, its reversal might be interpreted as an example of remarkable continuity. Yet I disagree with conclusions contending that the Caribbean family has hardly changed since emancipation. Curacao appears to be a strong case for an economic explanation of these developments. Yet an exclusively economic explanation is too limited.
