Abstract

This paper deals with the introduction of radio frequency identification (RFID) in maritime container logistics, focussing on RFID-based process modifications and the related problems in existing IT systems. Logistics IT systems, as with other legacy systems, embed business logic, rules and procedures. Thus, the software is closely connected to the process itself and modifications require direct changes to the systems. We demonstrate how a service-oriented architecture (SOA) facilitates IT adoption by functioning as a software layer between process and legacy system to enable flexible process. The architecture also allows easy integration of new RFID-based functionalities into existing processes. Implementation costs can be reduced by combining new and legacy functions in appropriate ways.
