Interview with martyn sloman

Pages 333-338 | Published online: 18 Sep 2007

Abstract

This interview, with one of the key advisors to the UK's Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, presents a wide ranging view of the changes in the field of learning, training and development over the past twenty years. It notes the shift from the top down interventions that characterised training, to processes within the domain of the learner. It outlines the biggest challenges going forward including the ever-widening range of stakeholders involved in delivering the human resource agenda and the changing shape of the people and development profession itself.

1. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) is the leading professional body in the UK and Ireland for those involved in the management and development of people. It exists to serve the professional interests of members and to lead in the development and promotion of good practice in this field. It currently has 127,500 members and has a recognised accredited qualification structure (The Professional Development Scheme (PDS)) which is taught in some 120 Universities and Colleges in the UK and Ireland. The CIPD includes both personnel management and training professionals in its membership, as well as the specialisms for example remuneration and diversity in its membership. In 1994, two UK bodies, the Institute of Personnel Management and the Institute of Training and Development voted to merge and form the Institute of Personnel and Development (IPD). The merged body achieved Chartered Status in 2001. The CIPD is affiliated with other HR and learning, training and development organisations around the world through our membership of the European Association for Personnel Management (EAPM), the World Federation of Personnel Management Associations (WFPMA, the European Training and Development Federation (ETDF) and the International Federation of Training and Development Organisations (ITFDO). The CIPD takes a leading role in developing the profession world wide through a range of knowledge sharing activities such as making research available to international colleagues, speaking at international conferences and hosting overseas guests at CIPD conferences, advising on the development of new associations and participating in experience exchange seminars.
