Individual responsibility and social constraint: The construction of adolescent motherhood in social scientific research

Abstract

Research has an important role in the production of knowledge and in shaping dominant social attitudes towards adolescent motherhood. Although adolescent motherhood has been framed as a social problem in social scientific research, recent researchers have attempted to go beyond the focus on disadvantage to suggest that outcomes for adolescent mothers depend upon individual differences and contextual factors related to successful mothering. Social structures have also been considered, and adolescent motherhood has been investigated from the perspective of the mothers themselves. Each of these approaches to researching adolescent motherhood provides a subject position for adolescent mothers with associated potential for both positive and negative impact on their social lives. These implications and the alternatives to individualizing success and discounting social constraint require consideration. Useful strategies could include valuing motherhood regardless of the social and economic position of the mother, and addressing structures which contribute to the exclusion of adolescent mothers from education and economic participation.

La recherche joue un rôle important dans la production des connaissances et dans la construction des attitudes sociales dominantes vis‐à‐vis de la maternité chez les adolescentes. Bien que cette dernière soit abordée comme un handicap par la recherche en sciences sociales, des chercheurs ont récemment tenté d'aller au‐delà de cette focalisation sur le handicap social pour suggérer que les résultats pour les mères adolescentes dépendent de leurs caractéristiques individuelles et des facteurs contextuels relatifs aux soins maternels réussis. Les structures sociales ont également été prises en compte, et la maternité chez les adolescentes a été explorée à partir de la perspective des mères elles‐mêmes. Chacune de ces approches de recherche sur la maternité chez les adolescentes confère une position de sujet aux mères adolescentes, avec un potentiel d'impact à la fois positif et négatif sur leurs vies sociales. Aussi bien ces implications que les alternatives à l'individualisation du succès et à la mise à l'écart des contraintes sociales doivent être prises en considération. Des stratégies utiles pourraient inclure une valorisation de la maternité, quelque soit la position sociale et économique de la mère, et une réflexion sur les structures qui contribuent à l'exclusion des mères adolescentes de l'éducation et de la participation économique.

Resumen

La investigación tiene un rol muy importante en la producción de conocimientos y en modelar las actitudes sociales dominantes hacia la maternidad adolescente. Aunque en las investigaciones científico sociales se ha encasillado la maternidad adolescente como un problema social, en investigaciones recientes se ha intentado ir más allá y no centrarse solamente en las desventajas sino que se ha sugerido que los resultados de las madres adolescentes dependen de las diferencias individuales y los factores contextuales relacionados con el éxito de la maternidad. También se han tenido en cuenta las estructuras sociales y se ha investigado la maternidad adolescente a partir de la perspectiva de las propias madres. Cada uno de estos planteamientos hacia la investigación de la maternidad adolescente ofrece a las madres adolescentes una posición de sujeto relacionada potencialmente en sus vidas sociales tanto con un impacto positivo como uno negativo. Hay que analizar mejor estas implicaciones y las alternativas al éxito de individualidad e ignorar las limitaciones sociales. Algunas estrategias útiles podrían ser, por un lado, valorar la maternidad independientemente de la posición social y económica de la madre y, por otro, considerar las estructuras que contribuyen a la exclusión de las madres adolescentes de la educación y la participación económica.
