Social environment and sexual risk-taking among gay and transgender African American youth

Abstract

More prevention effort is required as the HIV epidemic increases among gay and transgender African American youth. Using ecological systems theory and an integrative model of behaviour change, this study examines the sexual behaviour of gay and transgender African American young people as embedded within the unique social and structural environments affecting this population. Also examined is the important role played by mobile technology in the social and sexual lives of individuals. Seven focus groups were conducted with 54 African American young adults in a northeastern US city. The findings provide a rich examination of the social and sexual lives of gay and transgender African American youth, focusing on the social environment and the impact of the environment on sexual-risk behaviour.

El crecimiento de la epidemia de vih entre jóvenes afroamericanos gais y transexuales cada vez más requiere mayores esfuerzos de prevención. Apoyándose en la teoría de sistemas ecológicos y en un modelo integrador de modificación de conductas, el presente estudio examina el comportamiento de jóvenes afroamericanos gais y transexuales en el marco de los ámbitos sociales y estructurales únicos que afectan a esta población. Asimismo, analiza el importante rol desempeñado por la tecnología móvil en las vidas sociales y sexuales de estos individuos. Con este objetivo se realizaron siete grupos de enfoque en los que participaron 54 jóvenes afroamericanos, residentes en una ciudad del noreste de Estados Unidos. Los hallazgos encontrados arrojaron abundante información sobre las vidas sociales y sexuales de los jóvenes afroamericanos gais y transexuales, vinculada al ámbito social y a la influencia del entorno en el comportamiento sexual riesgoso.

L’augmentation de l’épidémie de VIH parmi les jeunes africains-américains gays et transgenres exige plus d’efforts de prévention. En nous appuyant sur les théories des systèmes écologiques et sur un modèle intégratif des changements de comportement, cette étude examine les comportements sexuels des jeunes africains-américains gays et transgenres tels qu’ils sont intégrés dans les environnements sociaux et structurels uniques qui affectent cette population. Il examine aussi le rôle important de la technologie mobile dans les vies sociales et sexuelles des individus. Sept groupes de discussion thématique ont été conduits avec 54 jeunes adultes africains-américains dans une ville du Nord-Est des États-Unis. Les résultats apportent un éclairage enrichissant sur les vies sociales et sexuelles des jeunes africains-américains gays et transgenres, avec une attention particulière pour l’environnement social et son impact sur les comportements sexuels à risque.
