Abstract

This article presents one of the most important personalities of the historical development of social work theories and methods in the Czech Republic. Marie Krakešová (1898–1979) was the creator and main representative of psychological-educational social therapy. This started between the world wars and was a reaction to expanding social problems, mainly among the urban poor. It is argued that individual and family-focused social therapy is timeless in many aspects and can be an inspiration for today's social work.

Notes

1. In her last work Marie Krakešová (1973a, 1973b) states that the term ‘social case’ is considered humiliating and she replaces it, not very consistently, by the term ‘social client’. This term is also used by contemporary professional literature and in its practice.
