Participatory action research in local development: an opportunity for social work

ABSTRACT

Even if related to the seminal work of Kurt Lewin dating back to 1946, participatory approaches like action research still represent a relevant theoretical and practical set of methodologies for social work and research. In this article, after a brief overview of this methodological approach, the use of this paradigm in social work is explored, with a special focus on the development of symbolic and material resources within local communities. The processes and forms of involvement are examined with regard to the Italian experience of local development. An application of the participatory methodology stemming from a phenomenological approach proposed by Achille Ardigò, a well-known Italian sociologist, is employed. Following these premises, a procedural model enhancing the development of social groups is considered as the building block of community development. Short examples are provided. It is concluded that, in the process of local development, the symbolic and the immaterial dimensions need to be stimulated, as well as the material and the infrastructural ones. In order to achieve this, correct tools are needed.

Nonostante risalgano al 1946, data di edizione del primo lavoro di Kurt Lewin dove la Ricerca-Azione viene statuita, gli approcci partecipativi in generale rappresentano ancora un importante assieme di metodologie, irrinunciabili per gli operatori del lavoro sociale. In questo articolo, dopo una breve panoramica su tali approcci metodologici e sulla ricerca-azione in particolare, l’uso di questa viene contestualizzato nello sviluppo delle risorse simboliche e materiali nelle comunità locali. Sono considerati forme e processi dello sviluppo locale, con particolare attenzione al caso italiano. Viene proposto un modello applicativo che prende le mosse dall’approccio fenomenologico Ardigoiano sullo sviluppo dei piccoli gruppi come elemento costitutivo dello sviluppo locale. Viene concluso che nei processi di sviluppo locale, le dimensioni simboliche ed immateriali necessitano una attenzione ed una progettazione pari a quella usualmente dedicate alle dimensioni materiali ed infrastrutturali. Per sostanzializzare tale attenzione è necessario possedere e porre in essere gli strumenti corretti, alcuni dei quali qui appunto considerati.
