Retraining programmes in social work: career considerations, factors influencing the decision to study social work and professional preferences among students

ABSTRACT

The current study sought to examine the differences between retraining programme (RP) students in social work (SW) and mainstream programme (MP) students regarding career considerations, factors influencing the decision to study SW and professional preferences. RPs are similar to fast-track training programmes known in the UK, as they offer graduates from other disciplines a qualification in SW. This study was conducted among 125 SW students in Israel: 56 in the RP, where studying SW was their secondary choice (after graduating in a different academic discipline) and 69 MP students for whom SW was their first choice for a profession. Both groups were examined in their final year of studies. When choosing their profession, RP students attributed greater importance to considerations such as personal development, satisfaction and interest in treating people, while for MP students, working conditions were more important. In addition, RP students also preferred to engage in individual therapy and policy practice. Furthermore, there were several differences between the groups’ preferences regarding types of populations, services and sectors. Correlations were found between various preferences of populations, services and fieldwork training. Lastly, a higher percentage of RP students compared to MP students had expressed their intention to work as social workers once they complete their studies.

תקציר

המחקר הנוכחי בוחן את השיקולים בבחירת המקצוע וההעדפות המקצועיות של סטודנטים הלומדים לקראת תואר ראשון בעבודה סוציאלית בישראל. המחקר נערך בקרב 125 סטודנטים לעבודה סוציאלית בשנתם האחרונה לתואר ובדק את ההבדלים בין סטודנטים בתכנית הסבה, המיועדת לסטודנטים בעלי תואר ראשון במקצועות שונים, (N = 56) לבין סטודנטים בתכנית הרגילה (N = 69). סטודנטים בתכנית ההסבה דיווחו על התפתחות אישית, סיפוק ועניין בטיפול באוכלוסיות מגוונות כשיקולים מרכזיים בבחירת מקצוע העבודה הסוציאלית. לעומתם, סטודנטים מהתכנית הרגילה דיווחו על תנאי העבודה כשיקול מרכזי בבחירת המקצוע. כמו כן, נמצאו הבדלים בין קבוצות הסטודנטים לגבי העדפותיהם המקצועיות. לדוגמה, סטודנטים מתכנית ההסבה העדיפו לעסוק בטיפול פרטני ובפרקטיקת מדיניות יותר מסטודנטים בתכנית הרגילה. בניתוח משוואות מבניות לגבי כל המדגם נמצא שגברים מעדיפים לעסוק בעיצוב מדיניות יותר מנשים, ואילו נשים דיווחו על חשיבות רבה יותר לתנאי עבודה במערך השיקולים לבחירת המקצוע. בנוסף, נמצאה קורלציה בין ההעדפות המקצועיות של כל הסטודנטים לעבודה עם סוגי אוכלוסיות ושירותים לבין העיסוק שלהם בהכשרתם המעשית. לבסוף, אחוז גבוה יותר של סטודנטים בתכנית ההסבה בהשוואה לסטודנטים בתכנית רגילה הביעו את רצונם לעבוד כעובדים סוציאליים.‏

Mrs Ateret Gewirtz-Meydan is a PhD candidate in the School of Social Work, Bar-Ilan University, and was awarded a full Presidential Scholarship for excellence for her dissertation. Ateret has completed her MSW in the Hebrew University, and received the Rector's Award for excellence. Currently, Ateret is a researcher in The Aging Research Lab and a member of the COST action on ageism where she is involved in research projects regarding sexuality and romantic relationships in later life. Lastly, she specializes as a sex therapist in the Sex Therapy Unit in Meir Medical Center.

Ahuva Even-Zohar, PhD, is a social worker and senior lecturer, at the School of Social Work, Faculty of Social Sciences, Ariel University, Israel. The focus of Even-Zohar’s teaching is introduction to social work; methods of intervention with individuals and family in social work; intervention with families in extreme distress; psychosocial issues and intervention methods with older people and their families. The focus of Even-Zohar’s research includes intergenerational relationships in the older families; quality of life, needs and solutions for the older population; and ageism among social work students.
