ABSTRACT
This narrative review outlines how school social workers, as part of multi-professional school teams, can be involved in climate change education and mental health support. Rapid climate change and extreme weather events pose an existential threat to children and adolescents, triggering a range of climate emotions such as worry, anxiety or anger. International research shows that current and future climate scenarios affect young people's mental health. In order to achieve good health and well-being, and to prevent serious mental health problems, it is essential to be aware of their climate emotions and distress. In the climate crisis, schools, as important social spaces for children and adolescents, are therefore challenged to provide appropriate educational responses and health promotion for students of all ages. School social workers can make a professional contribution by providing education and counselling aimed at promoting emotional regulation and coping, empowerment for climate action, building self-efficacy and resilience to climate change, and developing comprehensive climate and health literacy. Finally, new challenges and tasks that arise in this context and that require the professional development of school social work are highlighted.
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG
Der Übersichtsbeitrag erörtert, wie Schulsozialarbeiter*innen in multiprofessionellen Schulteams in die Klimabildung und die Unterstützung der psychischen Gesundheit von Schüler*innen einbezogen werden können. Der rasche Klimawandel sowie Extremwetterereignisse stellen für Kinder und Jugendliche eine existenzielle Bedrohung dar, die eine Reihe von Klimaemotionen wie Sorgen, Ängste oder Wut auslösen. Internationale Studien zeigen, dass aktuelle und zukünftige Klimaszenarien die psychische Gesundheit junger Menschen beeinträchtigen. Um die Gesundheit und das Wohlbefinden von Schüler*innen sicherzustellen und um psychischen Gesundheitsproblemen vorzubeugen, ist es unerlässlich, auf ihre Klimaemotionen und Distress-Reaktionen einzugehen. Schulen als bedeutsame Sozialräume für Kinder und Jugendliche sind in Zeiten der Klimakrise daher gefordert, angemessene pädagogische und gesundheitsfördernde Angebote für Schüler*innen aller Altersstufen vorzuhalten. Schulsozialarbeiter*innen können hier durch Bildungs- und Beratungsangebote, die auf die Förderung von Emotionsregulations- und Copingstrategien, die Befähigung zum Klimahandeln, den Aufbau von Selbstwirksamkeit und Resilienz gegenüber dem Klimawandel sowie die Entwicklung einer umfassenden Klima- und Gesundheitskompetenz abzielen, einen professionellen Beitrag leisten. Abschließend werden neue Herausforderungen und Aufgaben der Schulsozialarbeit aufgezeigt, die sich in diesem Kontext ergeben und die eine Weiterentwicklung der Profession erfordern.

Prof. Dr. Silvia Wiedebusch is Professor of Developmental Psychology in the Faculty of Business Management and Social Sciences at Osnabrueck University of Applied Sciences and teaches in the Social Work degree programmes. Her work and research focus on developmental and health psychology in childhood and adolescence, as well as clinical child psychology.
