In the realm of social work, the complexity and diversity of practices are often reflected in the various facets of this discipline being explored by social work academics. The compilation of academic papers in this issue underscores the broad spectrum of social work and its role in addressing social issues across different geographical, cultural and methodological contexts.

The geographical focus of social work research, for instance, is evident from studies that focus on regions such as Andalusia in Spain, Sweden, Denmark, and the Global South. Each of these regions presents unique social, economic, and political landscapes, which shape the practice and challenges of social work within their contexts. To give one example: the paper on rural social work in Andalusia delves into the specific practices and organisational frameworks that are effective in this region, providing valuable insights into how social work can be tailored to meet local needs.

The diversity of target populations in social work research, which is reflected in this issue as well, also highlights the discipline’s wide-ranging impact. From older individuals with intellectual disabilities to young adults facing employment challenges and high school students grappling with substance use, the scope of social work extends to various vulnerable groups. The studies on care for older adults and support for youth underscore the need for tailored interventions that address the specific needs of these populations.

The issue also addresses the challenges faced by social workers in various contexts. Issues such as managing fragile motivation among young adults and the difficulties in implementing quality social work practices in Spain point to the complexities involved in social work practice. The methodological diversity in these studies, including case studies, comparative analyses, and qualitative reflections, provides a comprehensive understanding of these challenges. For example, the investigation of relationship-based social work during the COVID-19 pandemic in Finland highlights the adaptability of social work practices in response to emerging crises, demonstrating the resilience and creativity of social workers in navigating complex social landscapes.

A notable and significant theme emerging in this issue is the emphasis on professional development and the role of social workers in policymaking. The comparative analysis of competence and professionalisation among return-to-work coordinators in Sweden, for instance, highlights the ongoing efforts to enhance the skills and capabilities of social workers. Furthermore, the study on social workers’ intention to hold elected political office reveals a growing recognition of the importance of social workers in influencing policy and advocating for social justice.

In conclusion, the compilation of these academic papers offers insights into the diverse dimensions of social work. The geographical, cultural, and methodological diversity reflected in these studies underscores the complexity and dynamism of social work as a practice and as an academic discipline.
