Abstract
The NCSE is a brief cognitive screening instrument designed to detect the presence of organic-cognitive impairment. The test was administered to 223 subjects referred for neuropsychological assessment. ROC analyses were performed and the results were examined to determine the efficacy of the instrument for detecting organicity in normal and psychiatrically impaired geriatric and nongeriatric adults. The results indicated that the NCSE was effective only for nonpsychiatric, nongeriatric adults. Suggestions were made how the NCSE may have some limited utility with gero-psychiatric patients.
