Extended physiological models for the simulation of the glucose metabolism

Pages 41-54 | Published online: 29 Mar 2007

Abstract

Two extended models for the simulation of the glucose metabolism in insulin dependent diabetic patients (IDDM) are described. The first model calculates the exogenous glucose influx after consuming a meal with known energy content. It consists of a submodel for gastric emptying and a submodel for small intestine absorption. Simulation studies revealed that the model is able to give plausible results for known physiological phenomena. The second model deals with the hepatic glucose production. A new hepatic glucose production function is proposed which was interpolated from published data. This hepatic function model takes into account the actual plasma glucose, insulin level as well as the glucagon level. Both models can be used as parts of an overall model for the simulation of the glucose metabolism in insulin dependent diabetic patients.
