Abstract

The paper presents investigations into growth parameters of bream (Abramis brama, L.) in the Curonian Lagoon. Age was determined for 365 fish. The age of bream caught was 1+–15+ years. The oldest age groups (14+–15+) were composed solely of females. Females grew quicker than males though difference between linear growths was established from the eighth year only. The following parameters of von Bertalanffy's growth model for the whole population were obtained: L∞ = 71.6, k = 0.076, to = 0.576. The value of W∞, calculated from length-weight relationship was W∞ = 8,806, and the overall growth performance index ϕ = 2,591. Compared with the growth of bream dwelling in other European waters, bream growth rate in the Curonian Lagoon is rather low. Correlation between bream growth and water yield in the Nemunas River was established.
