Physiotherapy Programmes in Europe: A Preliminary Report

Pages 39-43 | Published online: 11 Jul 2009

Abstract

To make an inventory of physiotherapy programmes, a survey was carried out in 17 countries from the European Union and European Fare Trade Association. A compact, postal questionnaire was developed by 24 people from 14 different countries. Results showed the existence of 3- and 4-year educational programmes, mainly organized in semesters and terms. Overall, many differences are found in contact hours and in clinical hours. Funding of the programme is mostly derived from the Department of Education or Ministry of Health. Many institutes have additional entrance requirements. The use of a credit transfer system is minor. Cultural and political differences, a lack of definitions in the questionnaire and language problems led to important interpretation problems. However, results show that further research in the field of physiotherapy education is necessary and would be useful.
