This article addresses the need for the African mining industry to adopt a more sustainable mode of operation. Though for decades, the domestic mining operations on the continent have produced mass quantities of mineral product for both national and international markets, at the same time, a number of environmental and socioeconomic complications have occurred as a result of ongoing activity. It is therefore high time that the industry begins committing to sustainability - namely, to improved environmental protection, and stakeholder and community relations. This can be achieved through enhanced community development, partnership formation, and clean technology implementation and improved environmental management.
