Abstract
The first document in our series on mining agreements covers gold mining in Mali. It is an important agreement, which shows how a weak African government tries to exercise influence over a strong transnational mining corporation through taxation rather than through ownership.
The agreement was signed in 1987 and the first shipment of ore was made in 1990.
