Outlook for polish base metals industry

Pages 35-42 | Published online: 21 Nov 2008

Abstract

This paper reviews the changing role of the base metals producing industry in Poland before and after the fundamental reforms introduced in 1989 leading to a market economy. The examples of copper, silver, gold, zinc, lead and aluminium are used to show the new barriers that have arisen for metal producers, and the changes in production volume, ownership structure, and environmental policy that have resulted from these reforms. The paper discusses possible future developments and Poland's role as a producer and supplier to the international market.
