Motivation for professional studies in psychology: An exploratory study

&

Abstract

This study explored students’ motivations in seeking admission to qualify as professional psychologists. Utilising a multiple-case study approach, we interviewed seven participants with a record of persistence in re-applying for admission to study towards a professional Master’s qualification in psychology. Findings derived from the thematic analysis indicated that the participants were driven by a keen interest and passion for psychological practice and a desire to serve the broader population. Intrinsic motivation explained their persistence in seeking admission for graduate study training in order to achieve professional qualifications in psychology.
