Becoming visible: Exploring the meaning of busking for a person with mental illness

ABSTRACT

Background: Busking is a long-standing occupation associated with entertaining others in public places for donations, and is enjoyed globally. Yet, little research has been conducted on this occupation or its mental health benefits.

Aim: A single case study design was selected to explore the meaning of busking for James, an individual who has a mental illness.

Methods: Three in-depth interviews were used to explore the meaning of busking. Data were analyzed inductively and categorized using Spradley’s domain analysis.

Results: For James, busking provides a mission in life and a means of visibility, acknowledgement, and contribution to society. Busking also serves a variety of practical purposes, such as making ends meet, and has other unanticipated benefits. While James identified busking as what he was meant to do and providing a means of recovery, he also identified barriers to participation for others considering busking as occupation.

Conclusions: For one individual with a mental illness, busking served as occupational means to a variety of outcomes, including improved mental health and well-being. Researchers are encouraged to use single case designs to further understandings of the idiosyncratic nature of participation in occupations and how they promote health.

Contexto: Tocar música o actuar en la calle es una antigua ocupación asociada a entretener a la gente en lugares públicos para recibir donaciones, además es disfrutado de forma general. Aún así, se ha realizado escasa investigación acerca de esta ocupación o sus beneficios para la salud mental. Objetivo: Se seleccionó un único caso de estudio para explorar el significado de actuar en la calle para James, una persona con una enfermedad mental. Métodos: Se realizaron tres entrevistas en profundidad para explorar el significado de actuar en la calle. Se analizaron los datos de forma inductiva y se categorizaron utilizando el análisis de dominio de Spradley. Resultados: Para James, actuar en la calle le proporciona una misión en la vida, visibilidad, agradecimiento y contribución a la sociedad. Actuar en la calle también atiende a una variedad de propósitos prácticos, como por ejemplo llegar a final de mes y otros beneficios imprevistos. Mientras que James identificó el hecho de actuar en la calle como aquello que debía hacer, además de ofrecerle un medio para su recuperación, también identificó barreras de participación para los demás considerando el actuar en la calle como una ocupación. Conclusiones: Para un individuo con una enfermedad mental, actuar en la calle le ha servido de medio ocupacional obteniendo diversos resultados, incluida la mejora de su enfermedad mental y su bienestar. Los investigadores fomentan la utilización de diseños de un único caso para futuras comprensiones de la naturaleza idiosincrática de la participación en las ocupaciones y cómo estas promueven la salud.
