Developing a descriptive framework for “occupational engagement”

ABSTRACT

“Occupational engagement” is a term often used within occupational science and occupational therapy literature. However, it has yet to be clearly and consistently described, resulting in a lack of clarity in the use and definition of this term. This paper is derived from a larger piece of research, which used social constructionism to explore occupational engagement for five men living in a secure mental health unit from an occupational perspective. This research required the development of a clear description of occupational engagement. Following an exploration and critical review of the literature, the process of developing a new description of occupational engagement is outlined. Occupational engagement cannot be considered in isolation, so within this paper it is positioned within a descriptive framework of values and consequences. The development of the framework returned to the etymology of relevant terms, considering both the value and consequences of occupational experiences. This is the first published holistic description of this term, as the framework fully acknowledges the negative as well as positive dimensions of occupation. The paper concludes with consideration of how this new framework could be useful to occupational science.

A menudo, en la literatura sobre ciencia ocupacional y terapia ocupacional se emplea el término “involucramiento ocupacional”. Sin embargo, este no ha sido descrito clara y consistentemente, dando lugar a falta de precisión en su uso y su definición. El presente artículo se apoya en una investigación más amplia que utilizó el construccionismo social para examinar, desde una perspectiva ocupacional, el involucramiento ocupacional de cinco hombres internados en una unidad de salud mental segura. Dicha investigación obligó a formular una descripción clara del concepto de involucramiento ocupacional. A partir de una revisión y apreciación crítica de la literatura existente sobre el tema se resume el proceso que llevó a establecer una nueva descripción de este concepto. Debido a que el término no puede considerarse descontextualizado, el artículo elabora un marco descriptivo de valores y consecuencias. Para establecer dicho marco se rastreó la etimología de términos pertinentes, considerando el valor y las consecuencias que conllevan las experiencias ocupacionales. En este sentido, esta es la primera descripción integral publicada sobre el término, toda vez que el marco reconoce plenamente las dimensiones negativas y positivas de la ocupación. El artículo concluye realizando consideraciones respecto a cómo este nuevo marco podrá beneficiar a la ciencia ocupacional.
