Integrating occupational and public health sciences through a cross-national educational partnership

ABSTRACT

Complex social issues, sometimes referred to as ‘wicked problems’, influence the conditions of everyday life and the occupations these conditions afford, which are key determinants of health and well-being. Education is an important arena through which social transformation of oppressive conditions can be promoted and enacted. At the same time, interdisciplinary approaches have been recognized as being essential for addressing ‘wicked problems’. We argue that linking occupational science and public health in education is a fruitful way forward for understanding complex issues and enacting social change. Our purpose is to describe a partnership between universities in Norway and Canada in order to address how the integration of occupational and public health perspectives on diverse health determinants contributed to the interdisciplinary education and mentorship of future researchers and health care practitioners. Three specific examples are addressed; the participation of students from each country in courses at the institutions abroad; the development of integrated public health and occupation-based curriculum materials; and the undertaking of interdisciplinary research conducted by graduate students that was co-supervised by occupational science and public health scholars from both countries. The cross-national educational partnership has contributed to the enhancement of participating students’ education, as well as the expansion of the partnership itself. Authors’ reflections regarding factors contributing to the success of the partnership, and challenges associated with sustaining it over time, are also briefly addressed. The description of the partnership articulates how international and interdisciplinary collaboration in education can expand the reach and potential impacts of occupation-based knowledge.

Las cuestiones sociales complejas, a veces llamadas “problemas infames”, inciden en las condiciones de la vida cotidiana y las ocupaciones vinculadas a éstas; las mismas son determinantes clave para la salud y el bienestar. La educación constituye un ámbito en el cual se pueden promover e inducir transformaciones sociales orientadas a atenuar ciertas condiciones opresivas. Asimismo, es ampliamente conocido el hecho de que los enfoques interdisciplinarios son esenciales para abordar los “problemas infames”. El presente artículo sostiene que la vinculación entre la ciencia ocupacional y la salud pública en el ámbito de la educación representa una manera productiva de comprender cuestiones complejas e impulsar cambios sociales. El objetivo de este artículo es dar cuenta de una alianza establecida entre varias universidades de Noruega y Canadá con el fin de integrar las perspectivas provenientes de los ámbitos ocupacional y de la salud pública, centrados en diversos determinantes de la salud; además, el ensayo examina cómo dicha alianza contribuye a la educación interdisciplinaria y la tutoría de futuros investigadores y profesionales de la salud. Para el efecto se abordan tres ejemplos específicos: la participación de estudiantes de cada país en cursos realizados en instituciones extranjeras; la preparación de materiales de estudio que integran las perspectivas ocupacional y de salud pública; y la realización de investigaciones interdisciplinarias a cargo de estudiantes de posgrado, supervisadas conjuntamente por académicos de ambos países especializados en dichos ámbitos. Esta alianza transnacional ha coadyuvado a mejorar la preparación académica de los estudiantes participantes, y sus logros en ese sentido han ampliado a la alianza misma. Asimismo, el artículo plantea brevemente reflexiones de los autores sobre los factores que influyeron en el éxito de la alianza, así como los retos asociados a su sostenimiento a lo largo del tiempo. Este análisis de la alianza da cuenta de cómo la colaboración internacional e interdisciplinaria en la educación puede acrecentar el alcance y los posibles impactos del conocimiento basado en la ocupación.
