“I can control what I do with my daily life”: Occupational experiences of adolescents and young adults with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome

ABSTRACT

Objective: This qualitative study sought to explore the experiences of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS), an inherited cancer predisposition syndrome, through an occupational lens. Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 38 AYAs with LFS. Inductive analysis was used to code for themes and patterns related to occupation and well-being. Grounded theory and interpretive descriptive frameworks informed data analysis. Results: Occupational loss was common, but positive shifts in occupation were also reported. Occupations delivered therapeutic value for participants in several ways, including providing positive distraction. Participants reported a desire to maintain normal occupations despite LFS. Conclusion: AYAs with LFS may benefit from a focus on finding positive meaning in chronic illness, exploring shifts in occupation based on health status, and identifying occupations that can provide distraction and emotional relief from the challenging process of lifelong cancer screening and treatment.

Objetivo: empleando una óptica ocupacional, este estudio cualitativo se dirigió a explorar las experiencias de adolescentes y adultos jóvenes (AYA) que sobrellevan el síndrome de Li-Fraumeni (LFS), un síndrome hereditario de predisposición al cáncer. Método: se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas a 38 AYA con LFS. Para codificar los temas y patrones relacionados con la ocupación y el bienestar, se utilizó el análisis inductivo, mientras que el análisis de los datos fue respaldado por la teoría fundamentada y los marcos descriptivos interpretativos. Resultados: aunque la pérdida ocupacional fue una constante, también se informó de cambios positivos en la ocupación. En este sentido, las ocupaciones aportaron valor terapéutico a los participantes de varias maneras, entre las que se incluye el proporcionar una distracción positiva. Los participantes informaron su deseo de mantener sus ocupaciones normales a pesar de padecer LFS. Conclusión: ante el desafío que supone el proceso de detección y tratamiento del cáncer a lo largo de su vida, los AYA con LFS pueden beneficiarse al centrarse en encontrar un significado positivo a la enfermedad crónica, en explorar los cambios de ocupación basados en el estado de salud y en identificar las ocupaciones que pueden proporcionarles distracción y alivio emocional.
