A Career of Japan: Baron Raimund von Stillfried and Early Yokohama Photography, by Luke Gartlan

Brill, Leiden & Boston, 2016, 371 pages, 163 illustrations, many in sepia tint and colour, AUS$160.77, hardback

Notes

1. There is one carte-de-visite attributed to Beato that shows male foreigners ‘looking over’ naked prostitutes, and visits to brothels and bathhouses are very casually mentioned in at least one diplomat's journal of the 1860s.

2. See Luke Gartlan, ‘Samuel Cocking and the rise of Japanese Photography’, History of Photography 33, no. 2 (May 2009). This special issue also has many other important articles on the history of Japanese Photography.
