Splinting the Difficult Hand

Abstract

Therapists are often reluctant to splint geriatric patients for fear of causing harm with rigid thermoplastic materials. Appropriate splints using non-traditional materials and techniques can enhance the quality of life of many patients with complex positioning needs. To design effective splints, the therapist must take into consideration the physiological and comfort needs of the patient, as well as practical needs of the long-term-care setting.
