ABSTRACT
The purpose of this commentary is to describe the role of occupational therapy (OT) in helping address the World Health Organization (WHO) global health goals of managing, and reducing the risk of developing non-communicable or chronic diseases. The WHO recognises the importance of the primary care setting in working with patients, families, and communities to achieve these goals. The OT profession through the whole person approach to health care has a distinct role in addressing health behaviours that lead the patient to self-management of these conditions. OT addresses issues that affect patient health via activities and strategies that work within the patient’s value system, while considering habits, routines, family and community culture, and working with the patient within their life context. This holistic approach to care ensures that OT has an important role in meeting the goals of the global community through the primary healthcare setting.
