Performance evaluation of a single-pad, externally-adjustable fluid film bearing

Abstract

Modern high-speed rotating machinery requires a well-designed support system for the spindle. Circular profiled bearings can offer only a little improvement on the performance. Attention was therefore directed to non-circular forms like lemon bore, offset half, pressure dam and multi-lobe bearings. A notable feature of all these types is their contributions towards the improvement of performance. All such improved bearings, however, retain the essential characteristic of being reactive to the operating loads and conditions. Another limitation is that the bearing surface cannot be altered while the bearing is in operation. Hence, an adjustable bearing is one option. This paper deals with the steady state performance evaluation of a single-pad, externally-adjustable fluid film bearing. The bearing has an aspect ratio of 1.0, and operates over a wide range of eccentricity ratios and adjustments. Three load-offset positions (β/χ) of 0.45, 0.50 and 0.55 are considered in the present analysis. Steady state performance characteristics of the bearing are in terms of attitude angle, load carrying capacity, oil flow, friction variable and Sommerfeld Number. Steady state form of Reynolds equation in two dimensions is solved numerically using the finite difference method. The effect of tilt and radial adjustment on the steady state performance characteristics are studied and presented in the form of charts and tables.

Dr B Satish Shenoy received his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering in 1998 from Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), affiliated to the University of Mysore, and his Masters in Technology from The National Institute of Technology (NIE), Mysore, in 2001. He joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, Manipal, as a lecturer in 2002. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT, Manipal, in 2007. In 2008, he completed his Doctoral degree in Tribology (lubrication, friction and wear) under the supervision of Prof Raghuvir Pai. Satish has published 32 research papers in journals, and international and national conferences. He has also supervised 15 Masters thesis in tribology, stress analysis and fluid structure interaction. Currently two PhD students are working under his supervision in the area of externally-adjustable bearings and composites. He was a co-investigator for projects by Philips, Bharat Heavy Electricals, GE JFWTC Global Research Centre, Bangalore. He has conducted more than three short courses in the field of tribology.

R Pai

Prof Raghuvir Pai received his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering in 1982 from the University of Mysore. In 1988, he went to the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and completed his Doctoral degree in Tribology. From February 1995 to February 1996, he worked as a Department of Science and Technology (Government of India), BOYSCAST Postdoctoral research fellow at Cranfield University, England. He has two years of research and teaching experience (2000-2002) at Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. He was the Head of Department Mechanical and IP Engineering at MIT, Manipal, in 2004. In February 2005, he was promoted as the Joint Director of MIT Manipal. In August 2006 he was promoted as the Director of the International Centre for Applied Sciences, Manipal University, Manipal. Currently he is the Chairperson, Engineering, Manipal University, Dubai. Raghuvir has published 90 research papers in journals, and international and national conferences. He has supervised four PhD students in the area of water lubricated bearings, externally-adjustable bearings, tri-taper bearings and tribology of machining metal matrix composites. He was a principal investigator for research projects by Philips, Bharat Heavy Electricals and GE JFWTC Global Research Centre, Bangalore. He has conducted more than 10 short courses in the field of tribology.
