Abstract

Aluminium being lighter is mostly used to fabricate structures in aerospace and automotive industries. Welded joints are the common technique used to assemble the parts in those applications. These joints have a great potential to reduce the vibration levels thereby enhancing their life. In the present study, a mathematical model has been developed to estimate the damping capacity of layered and tack welded aluminium cantilever beams of unequal thickness. It is observed that there are number of vital parameters that govern their damping capacity. An experimental verification has been carried out to justify the analysis as well as to study the effect of these parameters. The developed damping model of the structure is found to be in fairly good agreement with the measured data.
