Abstract

Based on the analysis of the generating mechanism of cylindrical gear with arcuate tooth trace, a new way of modelling for manufacturing was proposed to solve the long-existing inconsistencies between three-dimensional modelling and the actual manufacturing processing and to ensure the correctness of follow-up analysis with the finite-element method and gear machining. Adopting the approach of gear blank’s rolling feed and gear cutting tool’s rotary, the three-dimensional model of the cylindrical gear with arcuate tooth was built. Also, the relationship between nominal radius of tool and bending strength of the cylindrical gears with curvilinear shape teeth is discussed by using the finite-element method. The finite-element analysis results revealed that tooth bending strength of cylindrical gear with arcuate tooth trace has a close relationship with tooth line radius. Therefore, the approach sets a good example of the establishment on strength theory and the design of processing, and provides theoretical basis and guidelines for industrial applications of cylindrical gear with arcuate tooth trace.
