Pages 172-186 | Received 04 May 2014, Accepted 21 Jul 2014, Published online: 09 Nov 2015

Abstract

Modern condition monitoring methods are used to operate rotating equipment reliably and efficiently. Latest practical notes and recent lessons learned on condition monitoring techniques, condition-based maintenance, trouble-shooting techniques and smart operation are discussed. The focus is on new technical knowledge, latest experiences and recent lessons learned on these topics. Formulations or complex charts or figures are avoided; latest guidelines, novel technical notes, new technical knowledge and recent case studies are discussed in this technical note. Predictive maintenance (condition based) is described and benefits of condition-based maintenance are also discussed. Optimum configurations of condition monitoring for various rotating machineries are addressed. Latest recommendations regarding bearing monitoring, integrated condition monitoring, trip levels, alarms, gear unit reliability, failure root cause analysis, inspection tips and reliability-centred maintenance are discussed. In addition, novel approaches, modern guidelines and latest lessons learned on modern condition monitoring are addressed. Eight case studies are also presented.
