Latest lessons learned, modern condition monitoring and advanced predictive maintenance for gas turbines

Pages 199-211 | Received 25 Sep 2014, Accepted 23 Nov 2014, Published online: 09 Nov 2015

Abstract

This article covers advanced methods, modern techniques, new findings and latest lessons learned for condition monitoring, maintenance and improvements of various aero-derivative and heavy-duty gas turbines. Advanced methods for cost-effective operation and predictive maintenance are also explained. Required methods and technologies for the condition monitoring, performance study, operation evaluation, improvement plans and maintenance should be specific to each gas turbine type and model. Practical notes and modern guidelines on gas turbine bearing types (rolling-element bearings and journal bearings), inlet air filters, combustor systems, unsteady flows, starting devices, internal air systems, oil analysis and potential hazards are discussed for both aero-derivative gas turbines and heavy industrial gas turbines. Different case studies are also presented.
