Abstract

Reciprocating compressors are the most common type of compressors and one of the most flexible machines to handle wide capacity and condition swings. They offer the most efficient method of gas compressing. They are vital machines in various units of industrial and process plants from air compression to refineries, gas processing plants, petrochemical facilities, refrigeration systems, LNG units, gas gathering systems, field gas compression units, gas pipeline stations and so on. In this article, advanced technologies, new innovations and latest configurations regarding condition monitoring, performance, flow management, capacity control systems, inter-stage arrangement, operational flexibility, lubricated cylinder, oil-free services, machine optimum speed, cylinder valves, piston rod, cylinder liner material, barring device, rod load, pin reversal, thermal management, cooling systems, flywheels, pulsation and acoustic conditions are presented. This article focuses on modern guidelines, latest practical notes and recent lessons learned related to reciprocating compressors. Four case studies are also discussed.
