The theme of this issue of Australian Journal of Mechanical Engineers is ‘Emerging digital technologies for sustainable transformation of traditional manufacturing’. This drew attention of more than 200 researchers, industrialists and practicing professionals who submitted over 270 scientific papers in related topics from 36 countries. The broad disciplines that are considered in this issue are; smart manufacturing, sustainable infrastructure, vehicle automation, environment-friendly materials, predictive maintenance and engineering knowledge management

The papers in this issue are selected as a representative sample of those presented at 2018 Global Congress on Manufacturing and Management, and hence cover the fundamental and advanced principles of sustainable digital manufacturing. We hope that this collection will cater to diverse readers of Australian Journal of Mechanical Engineers, wider audience of researchers, academics, scientists, engineers, managers and policymakers interested in manufacturing and management.

We also hope that this AJME issue helps realise the objective of fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange between industry and academic stakeholders within Australia and abroad, for the ultimate purpose of advancement in mechanical, manufacturing and wider inter-disciplinary engineering.
