A review on parameters affecting properties of biomaterial SS 316L

ABSTRACT

Biomaterials are synthetic and natural materials that restore or replace the part of the body to improve human health by functioning the natural living tissue or organ. It should be biocompatible, biodegradable or bioabsorbable depends on the application. Biomaterials could be metal, polymer and ceramic or combination of these. This paper reviews all types of biomaterials and their particular application mainly focusing on metallic materials. Metallic materials mostly used are Titanium alloys, Co-Cr alloys and stainless steel alloys. Presently Stainless steel 316L is widely used and the effect of a different parameters such as manufacturing process, composition, heat treatments and surface treatment on biocompatibility of stainless steel 316L are discussed in detail.

Chintan Morsiya is an Assistant professor in the department of Mechanical Engineering at Ahmedabad and also working as a researcher in the field of biomaterials and casting technology since 2016. He has completed Master of Technology(M.Tech) in the field of Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) from CHARUSAT University, Changa and graduated in the field of Mechanical Engineering from Gujarat Technological University (GTU). He is a reviewer in Taylor & Francis Group. He is currently working for preparing youtube channel for important topics in the manufacturing field and his new focus of research is 3D printing of biomaterials and checking their feasibility for industrial area. He lives at Surendranagar, Gujarat.
