Abstract
Powerline communications (PLC) has been used for many years for simple load management. New methods of signal processing have propelled PLC into the domain of advanced telecommunications, posing a threat to the monopoly of the local loop enjoyed by incumbent telecommunications providers in many countries.
Less well-publicised is the impact PLC can have on energy management. This paper introduces the new PLC technology, and explains how it can be used to manage demand, monitor power quality, prevent fraud - and provide a medium for broadband telecommunications.
