Study on lightweight design of aluminium alloy wheels

&

ABSTRACT

As one of the most important components in vehicle safety performance, the wheel has an extremely important influence on the safety and reliability of the vehicle. The lightweight design of a wheel is realised by combining advanced computer technology with finite element method. The solid model of a wheel is established in accordance with the national standard of by Solidworks. Then, it is imported into the finite element analysis (FEA) software ANSYS to carry out strength analysis and modal analysis, in which the fatigue test requirements of the light alloy wheel and the time load required by the experimental method. The analysis results show that the maximum stress is far less in the Aluminium Alloy wheel, and the allowable stress and inherent frequency of wheel meet requirements. Therefore, it is necessary to further improvement this result. According to the FEA data, the proposed design improved the wheel. The design results show that the wheel weight decreased by 13.9%, indicating that CAE technology can help improve the wheel design, shorten the design cycle, reduce development costs and provide a theoretical reference for the design and analysis of other types of wheels.
