Abstract
Maps can take a variety of forms from simple symbols to complex, interactive layers of information. Given their widespread use and potency as symbols and tools, maps are often assumed to be objective representations of reality. However, map creation involves an implicit privileging of certain perspectives. That maps are actually socio-political constructions has implications for how they can be used, by whom and for what ends. This paper explores the process of creating National Geographic's Crown of the Continent geotourism mapguide. Geotourism mapguides, like all maps, are influenced by social and political factors and thus act as a persuasive form of communication and an articulation of particular values despite being founded on scientific triangulation. In this paper we deconstruct the Crown of the Continent mapguide in order to shed light on why these maps should be viewed as socially constructed representations of space that are power-laden and have the potential to create a place-myth for the Crown of the Continent that is not representative of the values of the people of the region.
Résumé: Déconstruction de la ‘Couronne du Continent’: pouvoir, politique et le processus de création des guides cartographiques géotouristiques de National Geographic
Les cartes prennent des formes variées, de simples symboles à de complexes strates de renseignements interactives. Vus leur ample usage et leur puissance comme symboles et comme outils, on considère souvent les cartes comme des représentations correctes de la réalité. La création de cartes, cependant, implique que l'on privilégie certaines perspectives. Le fait que les cartes soient des constructions socio politiques a des conséquences sur la façon dont on peut les utiliser, sur qui peut ce faire et dans quel but. Cet article explore le processus de création du guide cartographique de géotourisme, ‘Couronne du Continent’ de National Geographic. Les guides cartographiques de géotourisme, comme toutes les cartes, sont influencés par des facteurs sociaux et politiques. Ils agissent donc comme une puissante forme de communication et articulent des valeurs spécifiques bien qu'ils se fondent sur une triangulation scientifique. Dans cet article on déconstruit le guide cartographique de la ‘Couronne du Continent’ pour illuminer pourquoi on doit considérer ces cartes comme de puissantes représentations de l'espace construites socialement. Elles ont le pouvoir de créer des mythes pour le lieu de la ‘Couronne du Continent’ qui n'ont rien à voir avec les valeurs des gens de la région.
Zusammenfassung: Die ‘Krone des Kontinents’ dekonstruieren: Macht, Politik und der Herstellungsprozess bei National Geographics Geotourismus Kartenführer
Karten können unterschiedliche Formen aufweisen, von simplen Symbolen bis hin zu komplexen, interaktiven Datenebenen. Aufgrund ihrer weitverbreiteten Nutzung und ihrer Wirksamkeit als Symbole und Instrumente, werden Karten oft als objektive Abbilder der Realität angesehen. Die Herstellung von Karten beinhaltet jedoch eine implizierte Bevorzugung gewisser Perspektiven. Das Karten tatsächlich sozio-politische Konstruktionen sind, hat Auswirkungen darauf, wie und von wem sie genutzt werden können, und für welche Zwecke. Diese Studie erforscht den Prozess bei der Herstellung von National Geographics Krone des Kontinents Geotourismus Kartenführer. Geotourismus Kartenführer, wie alle Karten, sind von sozialen und politischen Faktoren beeinflusst und agieren daher als überredende Form der Kommunikation sowie als Ausdruck bestimmter Werte, trotz der zu Grunde liegenden wissenschaftlichen Triangulation. In dieser Studie dekonstruieren wir die Krone des Kontinents Kartenführer um offensichtlich zu machen, warum diese Karten als sozial konstruierte Abbildungen von Raum anzusehen sind, die Macht beladen das Potenzial haben einen Ortsmythos für die Krone des Kontinents zu schaffen, der nicht den Werten der Menschen in der Region entspricht.
