Notes

* This article had its origins in the first Liverpool UPA Clergy lecture I delivered in Liverpool in September 1998. I am grateful to my friends Peter Winn and Neville Black for giving me the opportunity to share my thoughts with colleagues in Liverpool and for the wisdom and insight they have offered me over the years in understanding the reading of the Bible by the people of God. The extensive quotations fonned the basis of the lecture and are included in its published version for converuence.
