1 Antonio Bruni (see below) notes in his treatise, Relazione dell'Albania (1596), for example, that the Dobrudja was populated by Kızılbash Yürüks, who traced their origins to the authorities’ reprisal for the rebellion of Shahqulı in 1511. This may well explain the evolution of the Balkans as a stronghold of Bektashism in later centuries.
