Patrick Williams is Emeritus Professor of Spanish History at the University of Portsmouth. His studies of early modern Spain include Armada (Stroud, 2000/2009), Philip II (Basingstoke, 2001) and The Great Favourite: The Duke of Lerma and the Court and Government of Philip II of Spain 15981621 (Manchester, 2006) which appeared in Spanish as El gran valido: el Duque de Lerma, la corte y el gobierno de Felipe III, 15981621 (Valladolid, 2010). In 2013 he published a biography of Henry VIII's first queen, Katharine of Aragon. Henry VIII's Lawful Wife? at Amberley Publishing, Gloucester.
