Human touch in the era of automation

(Editor in chief)

The sudden rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has given patients access to more information than ever before. In specialist areas like fertility, however, the inaccuracy of this information is a critical concern. It’s worth noting that patients are often at their most vulnerable during fertility treatment as the sector continues to suffer from modest success rates and an inconsistent evidence base. It is therefore vital that patients, who in many ways can be thought of as consumers, have accurate and up-to-date knowledge of the treatment they are going to receive which allows them to make informed decisions. It cannot be stressed enough that the final decision of each patient is made by them and while this may be based on the advice of medical professionals it is no longer our place to assume that we have the complete say.

Building strong information-based relationships with patients can be compared to a building where existing information is the foundation and any new information is the structure above ground. If the existing, available, information is weak, the quality of any new information you provide patients is irrelevant and will not be understood. On the other hand a strong foundation, especially, when provided to patients at the right time and in right format can ensure they make informed and in many ways the most appropriate decision given their situation. In order to do this, it’s crucial that research into the emotions and perceptions, of patients, during fertility treatment continues. Ultimately, a sound understanding of the process from the patient’s point of view will give professionals a better idea of what to say and when.

At the end of the day, data and AI should be a valuable part of patient decision making but it’s not the only thing that matters. Without the expertise of professionals, the sensitivity they offer during a difficult time in a patient’s life, it is likely people won’t necessarily make the right decision for them. Clinicians and patient perceptions complete the incomplete picture painted by data alone. Without them, it’s just blank numbers on a page. Hence it is utmost importance that we should continue to publish articles about patient views.

This issue focuses on publications that explore valuable insights from patients and donors.
