Notes

1. Planners 2040 can be found at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/planners2040/

2. The number of subscribers is based on a list of emails of listserv members sent to PLANET from G. William Page on 25 August 2015. On this list were 1381 email addresses that included 120 duplicates. We estimated that the 1261 unique email addresses represent the number of members.

3. We should note that the sender of the joke apologized a day later for sending out the joke and took full responsibility for offending readers, but this did not stop the heated exchanges that ensued for over a week.

4. While in general this was the case, there were also exceptions. There were junior scholars who also agreed with full and retired professors and vice versa.

5. We should note that this member subsequently apologized for this remark after the continued back and forth on PLANET revealed how divisive and hurtful this statement was to other members.

6. Authors’ analysis.

7. The reasons for the resistance to joining Facebook include distrust of Facebook’s for-profit nature and concerns about privacy. Others have also indicated that they are not familiar with the platform, do not want to learn a new social media tool and appreciate the simple email format of a listserv.
