‘Just a sport made up in a car park?’: the ‘soft’ landscape of Ultimate Frisbee

Abstract

Consideration of the sporting landscape within which an activity takes place is an aspect that is often taken for granted but close inspection can reveal a wealth of information that is easily found, waiting to be decoded (Cosgrove 1989). Such information is important because it allows the values ascribed to the landscape to become more clearly visible (Lewis 1979). This study examines the sport of Ultimate Frisbee and uses a modified framework devised by Meinig (1979) to analyse different ‘views of the sports landscape’. An ethnographic approach was used and data were gathered through participant observation, the conducting of interviews and the examination of documentary evidence. Findings indicate that since the formation of a new governing body in the UK, greater standardisation of the sporting landscape has become apparent, however, spatial, temporal and constitutional boundaries within Ultimate Frisbee remain ‘soft’ and continue to be indicative of the sport's origins and ‘the alternative sports movement’ of the 1960s (Bale 1994).

La considération du paysage sportif dans lequel une activité a lieu est un aspect qui est souvent considéré comme allant de soi mais en y regardant de plus près on peut découvrir une mine d'information facilement trouvable, en attendant d'être décodée (Cosgrove 1989). Une telle information est importante parce qu'elle permet les valeurs assignées au paysage pour devenir plus clairement visibles (Lewis 1979). Cet étude examine le sport d'Ultimate et utilise un cadre modifié qui a été devisé par Meining (1979) pour analyser des vues du paysage sportif différent. Une approche ethnographique a été utilisée et les données ont été collectées par l'observation participante, en menant des interviews et l'examen d'évidence documentaire. Les résultats indiquent que depuis la formation d'un nouveau conseil d'administration aux Royaume-Uni, la standardisation plus grande du paysage sportif est devenue apparente tandis que les limites spatiales, temporelles et constitutionnelles à l'intérieur d'Ultimate reste ‘doux’ et continuent d'être un signe des origines du sport et le ‘mouvement des sports alternatifs’ des années 60 (Bale 1994).

Al considerar un paisaje deportivo entre que una actividad se ocurre es un aspecto que está asumido a menudo, pero a mirarlo bien se revela una abundancia de información fácilmente encontrada, lista para ser descodificado (Cosgrove 1989). Información como esta es importante porque se permite que los valores escritos al paisaje llegar a ser más visibles (Lewis 1979). Este estudio se examina el deporte de Ultimate Frisbee y se usa una esquema modificada hecho por Meinig (1979) para analizar ‘vistas diferentes del paisaje deportivo’. Un enfoque etnográfico fue utilizado y los datos fueron juntados por observación de participantes, entrevistas, y la revisión de evidencia documentaria. Los resultados se indican que desde la formación de un nuevo cuerpo gobernante en el Reino Unido, el estandarización del paisaje deportivo ha mejorado, pero, fronteras espaciales, temporales y constitucionales entre Ultimate Frisbee siguen siendo ‘suaves’ y siguen como indicadores del origen del deporte y del ‘movimiento deportivo alternativo’ de los 1960s (Bale 1994).
